"Who am I?" Identity Project display at the Walla Walla Public Library, featuring photos and short statements of participants on how they view their own identity, with opportunities for participation by the public.
A key resource for this community exploration of race and identity is the Genographic Project, a research partnership of the National Geographic Society and IBM tracing the genetic and migratory history of the human race from its common origins and ancestors in Africa over 100,000 years ago.
Special resources for educators and students are available from National Geographic, including a 10 minute video introducing the project, which will be shown on Oct. 6, and is online at http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/specials/in-the-field-specials/grand-central-genographic.html. A rich collection of additional materials called the Genographic Classroom Companion is recommended, and is available free online at http://www.ngsednet.org/community/resource_uploads/Genographic.CC.pdf.
